Skiddaw House is currently closed due to COVID-19. We plan to reopen from August for exclusive hire by single-household groups, subject to government guidelines and local authority advice. This will be on  weekends only to allow a 72 hour gap between groups. Please email to find out about this. We will be reopening as usual from 2021: please check the YHA website for availability.

Need to know:
Surrounded by mountains, with no other building in sight, Skiddaw House offers a real escape from it all. It's off-grid, out of reach of mobile signal and 3.5 miles from the nearest road. But walk, run or bike to this remote spot and you will find cosy lounges heated by wood-burners, comfortable beds and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Plus a well-stocked shop with food and plenty of local ales, wines and whiskies.
Skiddaw House is an independent hostel. It was built as a gamekeeper's lodge in the 1800s and first began providing accommodation to walkers, runners and bikers in 1987.
