Abierto desde abril 2.007 como un hostal juvenil, está afiliado a la Asociacíon de Hostales de Joventud de Inglaterra y Gales (Youth Hostel Association – YHA). Ve informacíon a http://www.yha.org.uk

Tenemos 22 camas en 4 dormitorios, una sala común, una sala de juegos, un cuarto para botas (¡donde se puede dejar las botas ensuciadas por el barro!), cocina totalmente equipada y trascocina. No hay electricidad de red/internet ni señal de movil.

Ubicado en El Distrito de los Lagos, Cumbria, entre las aldeas de Bassenthwaite al Norte y Threlkeld al Sur. El pueblo más cerca es Keswick.
Latitud: 54º39’ norte
Longtitud: 3º6’ oeste (el sol se levanta 12 minutos más tarde que en Greenwhich)
Altitud: 450m – el hostal de la red YHA más alto de Inglaterra y Gales.

Como llegar

En tren
De Londres Euston, varios trayectos directos a Penrith con Virgin Trains. El viaje dura 3,5 horas, en la linea Londres – Glasgow. Hay varios trenes al día pero a veces hay que cambiar en Preston o Lancaster. Cuando salgas de la estacíon en Penrith coge el bus X50 (uno cada hora dÍas laborables y sábados, cada dos horas los domingos) hacía Keswick. Baja del bus después de unos 30 minutos a pie llegas a Thelkeld al pub “Horse and Farrier” y luego camina unas dos horas.

En autocar, con National Express:
Desde la estacíon de autocares de Victoria, Londres (unos diez minutos de la estacíon de ferrocarril) hay un servicio de autocar directo al día a Keswick (el viaje dura 9 horas) y 2 a Penrith (6 horas por la noche, 7 horas y cuarto por el día ya que hay que esperar en Birmingham). Luego coge un bus a Threlkeld (ver arriba) or camina 2 horas desde Keswick.

En coche:
Desde Londres, coje la autovia M1 hacía Birmigham, sal de la M1 en la salida 19 cogiendo la M6, siga hacía Birmigham y luego hacía Manchester, luego Carlisle. Sal en Penrith, salida 40 y coge la A66 hacía Keswick. Dejas la A66 antés de llegar a Keswick, a Threlkeld después de 12 millas o 19.5km. Pasa por la aldea hasta El Blencathra Field Centre – Centro Campestre de Blencathra. Se puede dejar el coche en el parking al final de la carreterra y camina una hora a La Casa Skiddaw House. Alternativamente coge el autovia M1 de Londres hasta Leeds, después coja la A1 hacía Newcastle-upon-Tyne, pero deja el A1 a Scotch Corner, coje el A66 hacía Penrith y luego sigua las direccciones de arriba. Si no hay atascos, se tarda unas 6.5 horas desde Londres.

Por avion:
Los tres aeropuertos internacionales mas cerca a Keswick son Glasgow, Manchester y Newscastle-upon-Tyne. El guia “Rough Guide to the Lake District” recomienda más el de Manchester aunque no hay un razón clara al respecto. Hay varíos trenes directos desde el aeropuerto de Manchester or Machester Picadilly a Penrith. Para llegar a Penrith desde Newcastle, cambia a Carlisle. Hay trenes directos a Penrith desde Glasgow Central pero hay que tener en cuenta que el aeropuerto de Glasgow Prestwick está relativamente lejos de Glasgow. En cualquier caso el viaje dura apróximadmente 2 horas.

SKIDDAW HOUSE REPORT 2011

Skiddaw House had its best year ever in 2011 achieving 1500 overnights. The months of April, May and June were particularly fruitful but the poor July and August weather had a negative effect on business.
Improvements to the fabric of the building continue with the installation of insulation on the walls and the ceilings using environmentally friendly British sheep wool. The beneficial effect was so noticeable that the Trustees had their warmest October night ever in the House. Insulation work will continue over the winter. The effect of all this will be to further reduce the carbon footprint of Skiddaw House.
There has been a great improvement in the look, décor and comfort of the bedrooms, in particular the large end bedroom.
The beneficial effect of the photo voltaic cells continued over the summer with the gas fired generator being idle until October.
In 2011 Bill Sellers resigned as Chair of the Skiddaw House Foundation. The Foundation would like to express their grateful thanks to Bill for his dedicated and selfless service to the cause of Skiddaw House. Words cannot be found to adequately acknowledge Bill for his dedication. He will continue to be involved in the Foundation as long as he feels able to continue positively. The position of Chair is being filled by Terry Sloane from Keswick.
Another servant of Skiddaw House; John Martin has resigned as Volunteer co-ordinator. John has provided sterling work over many years. The Foundation will be for ever in his debt. If anyone can provide voluntary help please do not hesitate in contacting the resident wardens.
The Foundation also thanks the landlord John Waugh for his continued support and encouragement.
Do consider visiting Britain’s only mountain hut. You will be welcomed by Martin and Marie-Pierre. Skiddaw House is an ideal base for star gazers, ornithologists, mountain bikers, walkers and seekers of peace and tranquillity.

Depuis Londres, plusieurs
liaisons directes en train entre la gare de Londres-Euston (à 10 minutes à pied
de la gare de StPancras) et Penrith, par la compagnie Virgin. Durée du trajet :
3 heures 30 environ. C’est la ligne Londres-Glasgow.

Devant la gare de Penrith,
prendre le bus X50 (un bus toutes les heures en semaine, toutes les 2 heures le
dimanche) en direction de Keswick (prononcer [kezik]), mais descendre à Threlkeld “Horse & Farrier” (durée
du trajet 30 minutes), puis 2 heures de marche.

Depuis Londres, prendre
l’autoroute M1 en direction de Birmingham, puis la M6 en direction de

la quitter au niveau de Penrith, pour prendre la A66 en direction de Keswick.
Quitter la A66 avant d’arriver à Keswick, tourner à droite pour aller à
Threlkeld, traverser le village en direction du “Blencathra Field Centre”
(centre d’étude et d’hébergement qui offre des cours sur l’environnement et la
nature). On peut se garer tout au bout du chemin avant d’effectuer 1 heure et
demi de marche à pied.

Alternativement, depuis
Londres prendre la M1 jusquà Leeds, puis la A1 direction Newcastle-upon-Tyne,
mais bifurquer au niveau de Scotch
Corner, prendre la A66 en direction de Penrith, et depuis Penrith même route.

Compter 6 heures de route
depuis Londres (environ 300 miles ou 480 km) ou 7 heures 30 depuis Douvres.

La vitesse sur les autoroutes
anglaises est limitée à 70 miles/heure (112 km/h). Le gasoil est pluscher que
l’essence, respectivement £ 1.07 et £ 1.03 le litre en juillet 2009).

En
avion :

Les trois aéroports
internationaux les plus proches sont Manchester, Glasgow et
Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Le guide “Rough Guide” (cousin du Routard) semble
recommander plutôt Manchester. Plusieurs trains directs entre Manchester
Airport ou Manchester Picadilly et Penrith. Pour aller de Newcastle à Penrith,

Skiddaw House - 2009 Report

It has been another successful year for Skiddaw House. Business reached 1490 over nights. These are the best figures the House has achieved surpassing the best year under the old system. Britain’s only mountain hut is being discovered and Martin and Marie’s fantastic hospitality is being recognized.

BUILDING PROGRESS

Work was done in the spring to cure the bulge in the front of the house and to stabilize the floor of Wagtail, which had an alarming “bounce”. This has now been completed and safety is assured. With much volunteer and professional labour, a new woodshed has been constructed. This will provide dry fuel for the house, ensuring more efficient usage of valuable resources. Plans are afoot to complete the repair of the roof and the installation of an environmentally friendly solar system. This work is scheduled for March 2010.

VOLUNTEER LABOUR

Under the continued leadership of John Martin from Carlisle, volunteers have contributed enormously to the improvement and maintanence of the House. Again the contribution of useful labour has been over 800 people hours of unpaid input. The list is long. One of the obvious improvements is the repair of the boundary wall at the front of the property. A considerable amount of time and expertise has contributed to that project. As previously mentioned there was great volunteer input into the provision of the woodshed and its contents. Work has been carried out to improve and maintain the copse that provides a vital habitat to the flora and fauna of the area and thus enhancing the local environment. Other unseen and less glamorous work has been carried out on the drainage system and continuing damp prevention. The Foundation would like to thank John for his fantastic leadership. Indeed the Foundation is hugely grateful for the wonderful and generous contribution that our volunteers have provided. If anyone would like to contribute their time, enthusiasm and expertise please do not hesitate in getting in touch with Skiddaw House.

COMMUNICATIONS

One of the most important unseen improvements is an online capability. It is now possible to book online either via the YHA website at www.yha.org.uk or via email at skiddawhouse@yahoo.co.uk. This improvement is also seen as an essential safety feature for all those who live and stay at Skiddaw House.

EDUCATION

Heather Crompton has done sterling work in promoting Skiddaw House within Cumbrian schools. Hundreds of school children have benefited from the Skiddaw House experience. Repeat visits have been made by the American School in London giving their pupils a view of England that they can take with them in their world wide adventures. Skiddaw House offers youngsters a wonderful and unique opportunity at what is a very modest cost. If you are looking for an opportunity in giving youngsters a fascinating experience then please do not hesitate in contacting us.

THE FUTURE

We can only have a future if Skiddaw House is used by walkers and cyclists. However if you are interested in ornithology or even in star gazing, then Skiddaw House offers some wonderful opportunities. The busier the House is the more assured its future will be. We have plans to continually improve the House and make the Skiddaw House Experience a very memorable one for all concerned. However like all charitable organisations, the Skiddaw House Foundation needs financial support to fulfill its obligations. Wie kommt man zum Skiddaw Haus?

Mit dem Zug:
Von London-Euston bestehen Direcktfahten mit Virgin Zuege nach Penrith. Die Fahrt der Linie London-Glasgow Dauert 3-4 Stunden. Wenn sie aus der Sation Penrith herauskommen, nehmen sie die Busse X4 oder X5 (jede 1 Stunde von Montag-Samstag, jede 2 stunden Sonntags) mit Richtung Keswick.

Von der Station London Victoria (nur 10 minuten zu Fuss vom Bahnhof), besteht tägliche direkte Busfahrten Nach Keswick (9 stunden reisedauer) und für Penrith (6 Stunden Reisedauer – Nachtfahrten). In Anschluss nehmen Sie den lokalen Bus nach Threlkeld (siehe oben) oder sie wandern 2 Stunden von Keswick. Mit dem Auto:
Von London aus, folden wir autobahn M1 Richtung Birmingham, dann die M6 Richtung Manchester und dann Richtung Carlisle. Wir nehem den Ausgang zu Penrith und fahren auf die A66 Richtung Keswick. Wir fahren von der A66 runter, bevor wir Keswick erreichen und wenden rechts nach Threlkeld. Wir fahren durch das Dorf bis wir das blencathra Field centre erreichen. Sie koennen 1hr Auto am Ende der Strasse parken und ca 1 ½ Stunden bis zum Skeddaw Haus wandern.

Mit dem Flugzeug:
Die beiden naeheren internationale Flueghaefen nach Keswick sind Machester und Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Das Buch “Rough Guide” ueber den Lake District empfiehit den Flueghafen von Manchester.
Vom Machester-Picadilly, koennen sie mit dem Zug nach Penrith fahren, und den Zug entweder in Preston, oder Bolton, oder in L:ancaster wechsein.
Wennsie vom Flughafen Newcastle nach Penrith fahren wollen, und brauchen nur den Zug in Carlisle zu wechseln. In beiden Faellen, dauert die Reise ca. 2 Stunden.

Early summer 2008 - we have been pleased with the numbers of visitors at Skiddaw House, and have had many volunteer work days, and visits from organised work parties, which have been very productive.
